2nd XI vs SLHC 2nd XI. Sat 19th May 2018

Broadstairs 2s travelled to Highland Court on Royal Wedding day.

Skipper Andy Marshall lost the toss and Broadstairs were asked to bowl. The returning Farjad Yasir sharing the new ball this week with Bradley Ellison. After Ellison had started with a maiden, Farjad was welcomed with a boundary, boundary, dot ball, drop catch. Marshall underestimating the young seamers pace and was unable to hold onto the catch at first slip.

The 2 bowled well on a decent batting track, Farjad claiming the first wicket in his fourth over, Turrell trying to cut and edging through to keeper Brian Simpson. Ellison made his breakthrough in his eighth over, Farjad taking the catch at mid-on. He eventually finished his spell with 10-2-21-1 in the process bringing up his 350th Kent league maiden.

The spin brothers of Oli (10-1-37-2) and Mat Frewin (10-1-32-1) were now bowling in tandem, and had restricted the scoring shots. Oli as the elder brother showing the way claiming a double wicket maiden in his seventh over, firstly bowling skipper Jenkins for 56 and then Fowle adjudged LBW. Matt picked up his wicket in the ninth over of his spell, Shaw edging to Simpson.

Both spinners had bowled superbly, Josh Amos then carried this on. Marshall was able to set a defensive field and Amos bowled with good line and length. Lewis Hewitt then took the catch of the season so far, hit out into the deep, he sprinted in from deep mid-off, dived and caught the ball inches from the ground and gave Amos his wicket. Yasir (9-1-41-2) came back to finish the innings and pick up another wicket bowled middle stump.

Broadstairs were set a total of 212.

Brian Simpson opened with Matt Frewin and being his usual positive self, smashed the first delivery of the innings over mid off for 4. It was Baileys first over that put Broadstairs on the back foot. Simpson adjudged LBW for 7, and then McCormick bowled for 2. This brought James Bond to the crease.

Frewin and Bond steady the ship, moving the score onto 70, Simms then struck Bonds pads and he was given out LBW. Andy Marshall joined Frewin and kept the singles going, Broadstairs well keeping up with the run rate and were positive in their approach. However, Marshall was then adjudged LBW for 22. However at 111-4 in the 33rd over Broadstairs were still well set.

Frewin brought up his half century with a couple of boundaries before unfortunately being bowled for 51 (127-5). Lewis Hewitt hit some lusty blows and ensured Broadstairs were keeping in touch, Farjad Yasir was also keeping the momentum going. Lewis was then bowled for 22, Josh Marshall LBW (0) and Oli Frewin bowled (0) and Broadstairs had slipped to 154-8.

Brad and Farjad kept the score ticking over, waiting for the right over to have a real go. With 7 overs left they needed 58 but boundaries were hard to find. Ellison (16) tried to find 1 boundary too many and was caught with the score on 193. Josh Amos (0) was the run out trying to get Yasir (24*) on strike. Broadstairs were dismissed for 193.

St Lawrence were the strongest team we have faced so far and will be up around the top come the end of the season, but with a weaker team than normal we pushed them all the way.

This week’s MoM was none other than the cat with nine lives, the curly haired prince (edited for publishing purposes) Matt Frewin for his 51 runs and good spell of bowling.

Broadstairs welcome HSBC next week. Come down, have a beer and watch some good cricket.
