Broadstairs welcomed Bickley Park this Saturday,

Captain Andy Marshall won the toss and chose to put Bickley in to bat. Bradley Ellison & Lewis Hewitt opened the bowling, Ellison making the breakthrough in his second over with the perfect outswinger to the right handed Stafford, the ball going past the batsman’s defence and just flicking the top of off stump.

Broadstairs were made to wait for the second wicket, Captain Paul Crowdy and useful batsmen Mick King putting on a stand of 105, the Broadstairs fielding wasn’t great and the Bickley batsmen rode their luck but the introduction of Oli Frewin partnered with Ashley Ellison slowed the scoring rate. Frewin claiming a wicket with one of his deceptive long hops, caught by Lewis Hewitt and the dangerous King was gone. He cleaned bowled Crowdy in his next over with a beautifully flighted delivery spinning between bat and pad and clattering into the stumps.

Frewin also picked up wickets in his fifth and sixth overs, Ellison claimed a wicket in his eighth over and Bickley had slumped from 117-1 to 130-6.

The left arm spinner picked up his fifth wicket in his penultimate over, a superb spell of bowling that got Broadstairs back into the game. He finished his spell with figures of 10-2-24-5. Ashley Ellison also bowling well to finish with 1-22 from his 10 overs.

Skipper Andy Marshall came on for the last couple of overs, but it was his last over where all the action happened! His fourth delivery striking the batsman on the pad and the umpire sent the batsman on his way, his fifth delivery saw Brian Simpson take the catch, and with the final delivery and a hattrick opportunity, the batsman swung hard, top edged the delivery, Bradley Ellison running backwards got two hands to it, the ball bobbled out and a second attempt at the catch but he was still unable to hold on and it hit the ground (Sorry Andy).

Bickley had set Broadstairs a total of 184 to win.

Lee Hewitt and Nathan Fox opened the batting and Broadstairs got off to a flier, Lee and Fox played some great shots, classic drives mixed with some sublime cuts and found plenty of boundaries. With the score on 42, Hewitt was bowled for 26. This started a collapse that put Bickley in the driving seat. Brian Simpson bowled for 0, Fox then caught at gully for 20, Bond caught for 0 and Josh Marshall caught and bowled for 1.

At 59-5 Broadstairs were in trouble, Andy Marshall and Lewis Hewitt took the score to 78 before Hewitt was bowled for 17, McCormick was then caught behind for 4, 90-7. Marshall and Oli Frewin got to 96 before the rain came and saved Broadstairs.

We walked away with 10 points and go 2 points clear at the top of the league. A long way to go and with a big test next week against St Lawrence and Highland court.

The game was played in good spirits and the Bickley lads stayed for a couple of beers. We’ll look forward to going there later in the season and hopefully coming back with 18 points.

This week's MOTM was Oli Frewin for his excellent spell of bowling.
